Podcast with Phil Chandler and Kate ... about our Amm project

Recently I met with Phil Chandler of Barefoot Beekeeper fame.

He too is interested in native/local bees.

Do listen here to the podcast of our conversation.

Ardnamurchan Native Bee Breeding Project

The summer of 2017 will be the third season for this project, the initial funding for which was granted by BIBBA, followed in 2015 by a very generous £5500 awarded by Scottish Heritage Lottery Fund. This latest award has helped us to implement the project fully.

We have successfully introduced Amm queens from Colonsay; set up a well-equipped mating apiary with locally made stands for mating nucleii; and reared and sold many newly-mated Amm queens.

Summer is in full swing — new year planning to start soon!

After yet another wet June the bees have recovered during the mixed July weather with many days of sunshine.

Soon the ling heather will be in bloom and it'll be time to harvest the Spring/Summer crop, in supers with wired foundation. Instead, frames should have unwired foundation or mere strips of wax at the top.

Folk say the beekeeping year starts with Winter preparations ... so watch this space for more about this important set of tasks.
